I kept this one pretty simple: I dressed in white, then added an old pair of wings from the costume bin. (Though these are actually left over from one of my costumes, not one of my mom's) The halo is just sparkly gold pipe cleaners that I wove together.
Time: About 10 minutes prep, 5 minutes day of
Would I Actually Wear This For Halloween: Eh, only if I had a better pair of wings. This pair is pretty worn out, if you look close you can see a bunch of holes. It probably won't get used again. In general, though, it's not a very exciting costume, is it? We did take a photo with me and someone who dressed up as a devil playing "shoulder angels", which was fun, but the owner of the phone is taking forever to send it to me so you'll just have to check back later if you want to see that.
Most Appropriate Halloween Song: "Creep" by Radiohead (but that song swears so I linked instead to the version from The Book of Life soundtrack)
Costume #27: TV Shows
The balloons behind me really sell the look.
I wore a white polo under a black t-shirt, then added a black skirt, socks, and shoes.
I finished off my white eye-shadow making my face pale (and then filled in with white pastel chalk-- which probably isn't good for my skin but did remind me of a great scene from the original tv show when a door-to-door makeup saleswoman asks Wednesday Addams what powder her mother uses. Wednesday says, "Baking powder." The woman laughs and says, "No, what powder does she put on her face?" Wednesday says, "Baking powder."). Then I used plenty of black eyeliner and some black lipstick. I did a zig-zag part, then put my hair into two tight braids, using some hair spray to make everything smooth.
Time: About 45 minutes.
Notable or Unexpected Reactions: Two recyclers passed by at work, one of whom said, "I love the irony of you dressing up like this on a Wednesday."
Recycler 2 says, "Huh?"
Recycler 1: "Because today is Wednesday?"
Recycler 2: "I still don't get it.:
Recycler 1: "She's Wednesday."
Recycler 2: *Looks at me and jumps* "Holy Crap, you are Wednesday!"
He was not the last person to completely miss the face that I was dressed up on Wednesday as Wednesday until having it explicitly pointed out to him, but he did have the funniest reaction.
Would I Actually Wear This For Halloween: You know, I might? I had a good time with this one. It's simple and easy, but makes a pretty good impression, and everyone recognizes it.
Most Appropriate Halloween Song: You probably know what it is already.
Costume # 28: Opposite Day
When I first saw this on the list, I wasn't sure what to do. Most of the people who did dress up for this (only the managers) did some variation on cross-dressing. I took more of a... two-faced approach:
I did mismatched socks and shoes, and wore a long sleeved shirt so that I could do the sleeves differently and only tuck in one side.
On one side I braided my hair and used natural makeup. On the other side I did a high pony, used a different shade of concealer, and did more extreme makeup colors.
Time: About 20 minutes
Would I Actually Wear This For Halloween: Nope. Honestly this one was pretty disappointing, it looked a lot cooler in my head.
Most Appropriate Halloween Song: Let's go with a little gem from the tv show Arthur. "Jekyll Hyde"
Costume #29: Fairy Tales
This was another "last minute" addition to the costume theme list, but the managers did think to tell me this time. And it was a pretty easy costume to put together: I borrowed a dress and a tiara from my Mom and then carried around a toy frog.
Sadly, he did not turn into a prince.
I curled my hair a little (I'm not very good at it, especially with how long it's getting) and did more natural looking makeup.
Time: About 20 minutes
Unexpected or Notable Reactions: I had no idea how many adults have never heard the story of the Frog Prince. Nor how many only know it because of the recent Disney movie.
Would I Actually Wear This For Halloween: Maybe, I'd think about it anyway. Probably wouldn't bother trying to put my hair in curlers, the results weren't worth the discomfort.
Most Appropriate Halloween Song: "I've Got Friends on the Other Side" from The Princess and the Frog. (Honorable mention goes to "Cautionary Tale" by Dylan LeBlanc)
Costume #30: Masquerade
The outfit is pretty simple-- black t-shirt, the skirt from my Day of the Dead costume, and I borrowed a little fascinator top hat from the store. But this is one of my costumes where the clothes really aren't the focus-- it's the makeup.
I drew out the basic mask shape with eyeliner, used black eye shadow to fill in, then added the details around the edge in eyeliner and a little red lipstick. Then I mixed red and brown lipstick for the mouth.
I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I think that, like my Day of the Dead costume, this is one that would improve with practice so I'll have to try it again someday.
Fun fact: When I bought makeup at the start of this costume challenge, I got two sticks of eyeliner. Today was the day I finished off the first stick and started on the second.
Time: One hour, fifteen minutes
Unexpected or Notable Reactions: Now that it's October, the store is staring a thing on Saturdays where they have a kind of catwalk/fashion show with all the employees who dress up (and several employees who didn't dress up but who were persuaded to put on a mask and maybe a funny hat). They had someone announcing each costume over the loudspeaker as the employee walked past all the customers. But the person who wrote down the costumes and names couldn't spell very well, which led to an awkward moment where a girl in a dress and a masquerade mask at the start of the lineup was called a "Macarena Girl".
Would I Actually Wear This For Halloween: Sure! The makeup takes a while but is surprisingly simple and fun to do, and this would be an easy look to adapt to various outfits.
Most Appropriate Halloween Song: "Masquerade" from The Phantom of the Opera
It feels weird updating this so late, when I'm already several days into the next week's worth of costumes. Partly I held off because last week was very busy (first week of orchestra classes, among other things). So you'll be seeing another post like this pretty soon.
In any case, it's finally October! People are slightly less surprised when I show up places in costume! So, that's something.
